Highly sought after one page 19" x 15" document dated July 25, 1938. An attractive Shellback certificate issued to William A Bartos, US Navy, and reads, in part: “To all sailors wherever ye may be, and to all Mermaids, Whales, Sea Serpents, Porpoises, Sharks, Dolphins, Eels, Skates, Suckers, Crabs, Lobsters and all other Living Things of the Sea, Greetings. Know ye that on this 25th day of July, 1938 in Latitude 0000 and Longitude 91° there appeared within Our Royal Domain the U. S. S. McDougal bound South for the Equator and for Galapagos Islands …Be it remembered…William A Bartos CBM…having been found worthy to be numbered as one of our Trusty Shellbacks has been duly initiated into the Solemn Mysteries of the Ancient Order of Deep.” Signed by “Davey Jones” and “Neptunus Rex” in type and boldly signed in fountain pen by Roosevelt under the printed Naval seal. Easily one of the most desirable documents signed by Roosevelt, honoring a tradition in the Navy.
Custom Framed in a 1 1/2" ornate gold leaf wood frame, single matted with a cream linen outer mat enhanced with a beautiful wood gold fillet. Matted into the display is a photograph of Roosevelt and a engraved description plaque. Enclosed in conservation clear glass which protects the signature from fading 99% UV protection.
